One of the most fun things about pregnancy is the anticipation. When I was expecting my son, I just couldn’t wait to meet this amazing, tiny person. My baby shower was a great way to share that joy with friends and family.
Now that my baby shower has come and gone, I still love planning them for friends. One way I’ve found to make baby showers even more fun is to make them a theme party!
A baby shower with a theme makes things a bit easier on the host because it gives them a color palette for party decorations. This coordinated decor is aesthetically pleasing and sets a mood for partygoers. And, even more importantly, by matching your baby shower theme with your nursery design, you can get ahead on decorating your baby’s room because it gives guests an easy style reference when buying shower gifts.
To decide on a baby shower theme, begin by choosing the design scheme for your baby’s room, particularly the color palette. One of the best ways to do this is to find artwork, drapes, a blanket or quilt, or a tapestry you love and apply its color palette to the whole room.
Next, match your baby shower theme to your nursery design scheme. You can let your guests know, either on the invitation or by word of mouth, that you would like gifts that match the shower’s theme. Give your guests an example by incorporating your design scheme or room’s color palette into the invitation.
Are there beautiful art pieces you’d love to see in your baby’s room? Request them on your baby registry. Babylist.com is one registry site that allows parents-to-be to include items from any store. Even if guests don’t purchase the registry items, it can give them an idea of the style you’re going for.
On the day of the shower, continue the theme by displaying some pieces of art you plan to hang in your nursery. Match items like plates and napkins to the theme, as well. Afterward, party decor, such as paper lanterns and fabric banners, make beautiful souvenirs that can be added to your baby’s room. Consider framing an invitation and hanging it as wall art to remember a day that was filled with love and excitement for your little one.
Your party’s theme is limited only by your imagination. To kickstart your brainstorm, here are five easy baby shower theme ideas to make it an occasion you’ll remember for years.
The Princess and the Unicorn by Rose Clayton
Enchant your guests with a fairy tale-themed shower that’s fabulous. Have a whimsical candy buffet Hansel and Gretel would be proud of. Festoon tulle and fairy lights for easy decorations that help set the magical mood. Display unicorn framed art to be hung in the nursery later on. If you’re extra creative, make up your own short fairy tale to be included on the invitation or printed as a party favor, and later displayed in the baby’s room. A fairy tale-themed shower gets everyone excited for the arrival of your own little prince or princess.
Space Dinos by Barry Gott
This great party theme mixes two popular gender-neutral topics that get kids excited about science: dinosaurs and outer space. Decorate eight refreshment or game stations as each planet of the solar system. Give your guests stickers or buttons that sort them into dino groups, such as triceratops, tyrannosaurus, brontosaurus, and pterodactyl. This divides guests into teams, adding a festive touch to party games that gives them a hint of competitive fun. For example, you could create teams for guests to compete in The Price Is Right: Baby Edition. Or, teams could race to put together dino or space-themed puzzles (the fastest team wins prizes; you keep the puzzles!). This theme sets the stage for a baby’s room that inspires adventurous imagination while making learning fun.
Secrets of the Garden by Judith Loske
Kids love bugs. Whether it’s because they’re squirmy, cute, or even icky, lots of kids find bugs fascinating. Maybe one day your baby will, too. And, who knows? With a bugs and butterflies-themed nursery, you may even inspire a future biologist or botanist.
Under Construction by Brett Blumenthal
If your baby grows to be like my son, they will be able to watch construction vehicles for hours in fascination. There’s something about big, loud vehicles crashing around a construction site that gets kids excited. With this baby shower theme, hide toy trucks and cranes around the room and have guests do a toy hunt. The person who finds the most toys wins a prize (and your baby gets to keep the toys!). Hang micro-sized toy construction vehicles above the buffet for decoration. Just don’t be surprised, when you deck your baby’s room out in dump trucks and bulldozers, if your baby grows into a kid who loves playing in the mud.
The Animals Ball by Julia Shahin Collard
Turn your baby’s room into an enchanted forest by theming your shower and gift registry with whimsical woodland creatures. These sweet, smiling furry faces will be your baby’s best friends, guarding them during naptime and playtime. And, with an abundance of decor items featuring adorable bears, bunnies, foxes, and more, adults can’t resist their cuteness, either.
No matter what theme you go with, your shower is all about getting ready to welcome the new baby on the way. Make your shower a unique expression of your dreams by choosing a party theme that reflects your nursery design. You’ll get gifts to help you create the perfect haven for you and your new baby to enjoy. And, it’ll transform your baby shower into an epic celebration you’ll look back on with your family and child for years to come.
