Woodland Friends Art Print by Anna Abramskaya
When the opportunity arises to host a party on someone’s behalf, I always get really excited. I can’t lie. I may not be a master party planner, but I genuinely enjoy the process of putting a delightful event together for a friend or loved one. I love hosting baby showers most of all. The decorations are so cheerful, the theme ideas are so varied, and the finished product gives everyone involved so much joy.
When my sister recently announced her first pregnancy, my head started spinning with ideas for her baby shower. My mind was made up for me when she and her husband decided on a woodland theme for the nursery, providing perfect fodder for me to create a corresponding baby celebration. The woodland-themed baby shower is perfect for moms who want a gender-neutral celebration, or those who find woodland creatures just as adorable as I do. From invitations to decor to themed shower activities, I’m more than happy to share how I created this lovely woodland-themed baby shower.
Backyard Treehouse Art Print by Paola Zakimi
Every good shower starts with a beautiful invitation. It’s a great way to convey the theme of your baby shower to your guests, and if your baby shower theme matches your nursery theme, you’ll probably receive some adorable gifts that coordinate with your decor! I frequently make my own DIY party decorations, and you’ll hear many of my ideas shortly. However, party invitations have never been my strong suit, and I just don’t have the patience to create 20+ pieces of handmade stationery.
Pro tip: check Etsy for gorgeous handmade invitations that will completely wow your guests—I repurposed this woodland invitation template for my sister’s baby shower. I absolutely love how everything turned out when I had the pages printed at a local office shop.
Where decor is concerned, I went absolutely wild with my DIY elements to bring everything together. I started with the main food table—where the cupcakes and finger foods would be displayed. I ran to the fabric store and picked up a yard or two of my favorite woodland-colored quilting cotton, and I laid the green leafy fabric as a tablecloth on the day of the shower. I also purchased several fat quarters of a variety of woodland-printed fabrics, which I sewed together into a really simple DIY pennant bunting to suspend between two trees in the backyard. I was really inspired by artwork by Paola Zakimi to create these decorations, and the result looked just like her Busy Squirrel Banner artwork!
For my last DIY project, I brought some wood from our recent tree trimming to my local hardware store and had the thick branches cut into 12”, 8”, and 4” sections. I stood these tree “stumps” upright on the table in clusters among pinecones and fern fronds, creating the very image of woodland whimsy. My sister loved them so much, she immediately wanted to incorporate these DIY tree stumps into her woodland nursery decor indoors.
The Animals Ball Art Print by Julia Shahin Collard
With all the food and decor set up in my sister’s sunny backyard, I started welcoming guests and collecting gifts. I adorned the gift table with my own present to my sister and her baby-to-be: framed woodland art prints with absolutely adorable children’s artwork to be hung in the nursery. I particularly fell in love with Alexandra Ball’s woodland designs and many of the shower guests commented on how sweet her Country Dancing, Naptime for All, and Picnic Under the Tree prints looked in their frames. I’m now convinced that artwork like this is absolutely essential in a woodland nursery.
Per my sister’s request, the majority of this baby shower was spent enjoying delicious snacks, opening gifts, and chatting with other guests. My oh-so-fun ideas for activities (including baby shower bingo and a game of pin-the-tail-on-the-deer) were graciously declined. However, I did manage to convince her that a s’mores bar would be a charming bit of on-trend fun that we could easily pull off. Taking inspiration from years of outdoor and indoor camping trips, I pulled together various gourmet marshmallows, a variety of chocolate squares, and a charcoal grill to entice our guests with the taste of the outdoors.

Finally, while I was more than pleased to provide my sister and her new baby with whimsical woodland artwork, I’d like to share some other inspiring baby shower gift ideas that exist within the woodland theme. Our shower guests provided some adorable woodland creature onesies, toys, and books—but some arrived with even more unique items.
One found a truly enchanting woodland creatures mobile, another arrived with a set of woodland creatures throw pillows for the playroom, and my sister received an incredibly soft forest Sherpa blanket as well. These items are functional, fun, and beautiful—and, speaking as a frequent hostess, they make perfect shower gifts for expecting parents. Seeing these gifts was the perfect ending to my journey as a baby shower hostess, and I can’t wait to plan other showers in the future.
