I’m happy to say that many of my earliest memories involve elephants. In my room as a girl, I had a stuffed elephant, who I named Dumbo, after my favorite movie. When my grandmother visited, she would read me the stories of Babar the Elephant. On the wall in our bathroom was a sewn and dyed picture of an elephant my father brought back from Africa. So when we visited relatives near Washington D.C. and took a trip to the National Zoo, what animal did I want to see? Elephants.
Perhaps inspired by my trumpeting childhood friends, I’ve never forgotten that elephants make fantastic nursery decor. For one, they’re round and cuddly. Their big flappy ears are delightful, and their trunks—which they squirt water from!—are absolute wonders. As a representative of the wild animal kingdom, elephants are tough to top.
If you’re planning an animal-themed baby room, I have plenty of suggestions to share with you for fun, friendly, and sweet elephant wall art pieces for your nursery zoo.
Before we get started, let me ask—are elephants going to be part of your nursery decor, or are elephants going to be your nursery decor? If you know ahead of time that animals in general or elephants, in particular, will adorn your nursery, establishing them as the theme for your baby shower gifts may help you find all the animals you’re looking for.
If you’re shopping on your own and want to add a single elephant to the menagerie, then look for a piece that complements the colors and shapes of your other animals. You can even find art with elephants and other animals, like a piece from this jungle collection by Jenny Reynish, or the Balloon Buddies by Ellen Giggenbach.
If you’re going all-elephant, which is an inspired choice, then it’s a game of same elephant-different elephant. You can go for an eclectic look by collecting elephants from various artists. On the other hand, choosing a few elephants from the same artist sets the theme and tone of the room, giving you centerpieces to arrange your decor around.
Now, let’s get to the elephants. If you’re looking specifically for elephant wall art for your nursery, here are some of my favorite choices:
Here are some lovely pastel elephants from Betânia Sensini, colored like sunrise and friends with the birds. I think what I love most about this collection is the spirit of cooperation and sense of humor. The little birds and their elephants are such good friends!
Next up, we have a couple of sweet elephants from Chloe Evans, with forested backgrounds, rich textures, and a pencil-sketch simplicity to the lines reminiscent of children’s art and comic books. What stands out most, though, is the obvious emotional connection between the mommy and the baby elephants. That, and the sense of calm created by the soft hues, would work perfectly in a nursery.
Nelly the Elly Art Print by Shirley Copperwhite
Last but not least, we have a breathtakingly colorful elephant from Shirley Copperwhite. The strong colors make Nelly the Elly ideal for nurseries with darker walls or less natural sunlight. And look at the globe she’s standing on! I think the rich colors, the big stars, and the bold patterns make Nelly a great companion for a future globe-trotter.
Of course, the elephants don’t have to stay on the walls. If you want more elephants in the nursery, think about bringing home a stuffed elephant for your little one to cuddle! Or, if your toy chest is already stuffed with animals, try an elephant blanket draped over the rocker and an elephant lamp to provide a soft light for bedtime stories.
Whether you add one elephant or a whole herd to your nursery, you’re bound to have surrounded your new baby with decorations they’ll love!
