Sunflowers. Sweet corn in the summer. Singing canaries. Sand by the seashore. And your baby’s new nursery. What do these things all have in common? They’re a bright, beautiful yellow!
As an interior decorator, yellow ranks among my favorite colors for nurseries. It captures the sun in a baby’s room, infusing it with energy, levity, and positivity. It’s gender neutral, a perfect fit for any baby. Last but not least, as a primary color, yellow works well with nearly any other color you can think of.
If you’ve decided to create a yellow baby room for your child’s nursery, you’ve taken a big step in the right direction. Now, let’s go the rest of the way by choosing some wall art to complete the room. Are you ready? Let’s decorate!
Before you can dive into choosing wall art for a yellow baby room, you first need to decide what hue of yellow the room will be. When choosing a yellow, consider it in the context of the sunlight the room will receive. Bold, sunshine yellows can work well in shadier rooms, and look particularly fabulous paired with bright-colored art like that shown above by Pragya Kothari and Kelly Breemer. If you’re getting a lot of natural light, I often recommend a softer yellow, like a tortilla, butter, or forsythia hue.
Because yellow can be on the bolder side, consider focusing on one or two complementary colors for trimmings and decor. Grey is a wonderful secondary color choice that works well with any shade of yellow. Greens and purples can soften the bright yellow walls, while reds and blues actually enhance the boldness of the yellow. Of course, you can’t go wrong with using bright white for your window sills and door frames, and using complementary colors for your decor items.
Once you’ve chosen your color scheme, it’s time to pick out a few decorations for the walls! Fun, friendly artwork for children will give your infant plenty to puzzle over as they learn to discern colors, shapes, and patterns. Here are a few of my favorite art prints that look beautiful in a yellow room.
When it comes to nursery decor, I’m a big fan of woodland settings, with softly curving creatures and gentle coloring. It conveys a warm feeling that I think is just perfect for a baby’s room. I especially love the work of Alexandra Ball in these types of rooms. This Picnic Under the Tree print is a good example of how to use other colors to complement your yellow walls. The rose color of the sky, the neutral greys, and the soft green, all underlaid with a yellowish hue, will stand out against the wall without clashing.
Another artist whose prints I like for yellow nurseries is Judith Loske. Check out these birds and butterflies she has created! Their thin lines and delicate shading lend a friendly, magical feeling. The colors she uses work perfectly in yellow rooms of a bold or pale hue.
The last artist I’d love to introduce you to as a potential decorating partner for your yellow baby room is Sue Downing. Her Playground collection includes many pieces in soft primary colors, including shades of yellow, blue, and red. Since the yellow is typically an accent in these pieces, it will help the piece pop on your walls, without becoming overpowering. Also, her sweet bears and bees are just so darling that you and your baby are bound to fall in love!
You don’t need a dozen pieces of art to make a nursery feel fully furnished. A few carefully chosen pieces—full of life and color—can make your yellow nursery walls feel vital, happy, and homey. As a designer, I love to include a few pieces from the same artist for a cohesive, thematic feel. However, mixing and matching pieces from different artists and in different sizes can create a wonderful gallery as well! Yellow is such a wonderful color for a baby’s room, you’re sure to find plenty of fantastic pieces of art to fill up your walls.
